The story
Vikings sailed east from here, founding trade routes to Byzantium; the 17th century made Sweden a Baltic empire under warrior kings until Russia ended the run in 1709. Two centuries of chosen peace followed, the longest of any European state, during which Sweden built the middle way: capitalist economy, universal welfare, consensus politics. Neutrality ended in 2024 with NATO accession, a two-century policy retired in two years.
The people
Lagom (just the right amount) governs Swedish life: moderation in claims, queues respected, fika (coffee and cinnamon bun, twice daily) legally close to sacred. Allemansrätten, the right to roam, lets anyone camp, hike, and pick berries on any land, an entire philosophy of nature written into law. Midsummer is the real national day, frogs dance included.
The economy
Innovation out of proportion to size: Spotify, Ericsson, Volvo, IKEA, Klarna, and a games industry (Minecraft, Battlefield) that punches globally. Iron ore and forests remain the base; the north now hosts Europe's green industry experiments, from fossil-free steel to battery plants.
Traveling there
Stockholm's archipelago is the summer dream; Gothenburg offers west coast seafood and friendlier prices. Beyond: Gotland's medieval Visby, the high coast's cliffs, and Lapland's ice hotel, northern lights, and midnight sun. July belongs to the Swedes themselves, book ahead.
