The story of Amsterdam

Amsterdam
Amsterdam in Netherlands · 52.37°N, 4.90°E · stylised map

Amsterdam is exactly what it says: a dam on the Amstel river, first recorded in 1275 when fishermen won toll exemptions. From that soggy start the city engineered itself into existence, driving millions of wooden piles into the marsh, the Royal Palace alone stands on 13,659 of them.

The 17th-century Golden Age made it the world's warehouse: the Dutch East India Company (VOC), founded 1602, was arguably the first multinational corporation and issued the first publicly traded shares, while the canal ring, now UNESCO-listed, was cut in concentric arcs to park the merchants' fortunes. Tolerance was good business: Descartes, Spinoza, and refugees of every faith found printing presses and safe harbour here.

Curiosities: many canal houses lean deliberately forward so goods hoisted to attic warehouses wouldn't scrape the facade; the narrowest house front measures about a metre; and the city counts more bicycles than residents, fishing tens of thousands out of the canals each year.
