The story of Luxembourg City
In 963 Count Siegfried traded some land for a rocky outcrop called Lucilinburhuc, the "little fortress." The name became Luxembourg, and the little fortress became one of the mightiest in Europe, layered by Burgundian, Spanish, French, Austrian, and Prussian engineers until it earned the nickname "Gibraltar of the North."
The fortress was so strategically radioactive that the 1867 Treaty of London ordered it dismantled and the country neutralised, which is why the city today is a garden draped over dramatic ravines rather than a bristling stronghold. What remains, including 17 kilometres of rock-cut casemate tunnels, is UNESCO-listed.
Curiosities: legend says Siegfried's wife Melusina was a mermaid who vanished into the Alzette and surfaces every seven years; the city is one of the EU's three official capitals, hosting its Court of Justice; and all public transport in the country has been free since 2020.
