The story of Kraków
Kraków is named for Krakus, the legendary ruler who, the story goes, disposed of the dragon living under Wawel Hill (a shepherd's sulphur-stuffed sheep did the trick). A metal dragon below the castle now breathes real fire for tourists, and a knot of "dragon bones" has hung at the cathedral door for centuries.
Poland's royal capital until 1596, Kraków crowned its kings on Wawel and taught its scholars, Copernicus among them, at the Jagiellonian University, founded 1364. The city escaped WWII physically intact, which is why its Main Square, Europe's largest medieval marketplace, and the surrounding streets went straight onto UNESCO's very first World Heritage list in 1978.
Curiosities: every hour a trumpeter plays the hejnał from St Mary's tower and stops mid-note, honouring a watchman silenced, legend says, by a Mongol arrow in 1241; the Kazimierz district's synagogues chronicle seven centuries of Jewish life; and the Wieliczka salt mine nearby holds chapels carved entirely from salt.
