The story of Warsaw
Warsaw's name comes with a love story attached: folk legend pairs the fisherman Wars with the mermaid Sawa, and a sword-raising mermaid, the Syrenka, has been the city's emblem since medieval times. The pragmatic version derives it from a landowner named Warsz.
The capital moved here from Kraków in 1596, and Warsaw endured Europe's hardest 20th century: after the 1943 Ghetto Uprising and the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, the Nazis dynamited the city block by block, roughly 85% of the centre was rubble by 1945. Varsovians rebuilt the Old Town brick by brick, using Canaletto's 18th-century paintings as blueprints; UNESCO listed the reconstruction itself as heritage.
Curiosities: Chopin left Warsaw at twenty but his heart literally returned, it is sealed in a pillar of Holy Cross Church; benches around the city play his music at the press of a button; and the Stalinist Palace of Culture and Science remains the building Varsovians love to hate.
