The story of Vilnius
Vilnius is named for the little Vilnia river, but the city prefers its founding dream: Grand Duke Gediminas, camped here around 1323, dreamt of an iron wolf howling with the voice of a hundred wolves, and his pagan priest read it as a command to build an unconquerable city.
As capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, once Europe's largest state, Vilnius became a baroque labyrinth and one of the great centres of Jewish learning, the "Jerusalem of the North," a world the Holocaust destroyed. Its old town, the largest baroque old town in eastern Europe, is UNESCO-listed.
Curiosities: Napoleon, passing through in 1812, reportedly wished he could carry the flamboyant-Gothic St Anne's Church back to Paris in his palm; the bohemian district of Užupis declared itself an independent republic on April Fools' Day 1997, with a constitution ("Everyone has the right to be idle") posted in twenty-plus languages; and its angel statue watches over the border bridge.
