The story of Riga
Riga probably takes its name from the Ridzene, a vanished tributary of the Daugava river beside which Livonian fishermen settled. Bishop Albert arrived with crusaders in 1201, founded the city, and made it the launchpad for Christianising the eastern Baltic.
Hanseatic wealth built the old town's gabled warehouses and the House of the Black Heads; a later boom, around 1900, made Riga the empire's most Art Nouveau city on earth, over 800 buildings drip with screaming masks, sphinxes, and sunflowers, a third of the centre. Between the wars it was called the "Paris of the North."
Curiosities: Riga claims the first decorated Christmas tree, allegedly raised by Blackheads merchants in 1510 and burned after the party; the Central Market occupies five converted Zeppelin hangars; and the KGB's former "Corner House" now opens its cells to visitors as a museum of occupation.
