The story of Helsinki

Helsinki
Helsinki in Finland · 60.17°N, 24.94°E · stylised map

Helsinki was founded by decree: in 1550 Sweden's Gustav Vasa ordered merchants to populate "Helsingfors" to compete with Hanseatic Tallinn across the gulf. The town sulked in obscurity until Russia took Finland in 1809 and needed a capital closer to St Petersburg, Helsinki got the job in 1812.

Carl Ludvig Engel rebuilt the centre in white neoclassicism, which is why Senate Square looks like a calmer, blonder St Petersburg, a resemblance that earned Helsinki steady work as a Cold War film stand-in for Moscow and Leningrad. Independence in 1917 made it the capital of one of the world's most contentedly functional countries.

Curiosities: the sea fortress of Suomenlinna, a UNESCO site, spreads over six islands a ferry-hop from the market square; Temppeliaukio church is blasted straight into bedrock; and Finland counts roughly three million saunas for 5.5 million people, the parliament has one, and so do Burger Kings.
