Finland

The story

Finland spent six centuries as Sweden's eastern half and one as a Russian Grand Duchy before declaring independence in 1917. It then did what almost no one else did: fought the Soviet Union to a standstill in the Winter War of 1939 to 1940, skiing troops against tanks, and kept its independence. Post-war neutrality ended emphatically in 2023 when Finland joined NATO. It has topped the World Happiness Report every year since 2018.

The people

Finns perfected comfortable silence and consider sisu (stubborn grit) the national trait. The sauna is where everything actually happens: three million saunas serve 5.6 million people, including one in Parliament and several in Burger Kings. Education is a national obsession done quietly well, and coffee consumption per head leads the world.

The economy

Nokia once carried the economy alone; after its fall Finland rebuilt on engineering (elevators by Kone, icebreakers, cruise ships), forestry, cleantech, and gaming (Angry Birds, Clash of Clans). Design, from Marimekko prints to Alvar Aalto's chairs, remains a signature export.

Traveling there

Helsinki's design district and sea fortress fill a weekend; the real Finland is the lakeland's 188,000 lakes, Lapland's midnight sun and northern lights, and a summer cottage with its own sauna and swimming dock. Come in June for endless light or February for snow done properly.
