The story of Copenhagen

Copenhagen
Copenhagen in Denmark · 55.68°N, 12.57°E · stylised map

Copenhagen is Købmannahavn, the "merchants' harbour", a herring-trading village that Bishop Absalon fortified in 1167. The fish were so plentiful in the Øresund that medieval chroniclers claimed you could scoop them out by hand, and the city grew fat on the trade route tolls.

The builder-king Christian IV (1588–1648) gave the city its Renaissance spires, the Round Tower, the Stock Exchange with its dragon-tail spire, and nearly bankrupted the kingdom doing it. Modern Copenhagen invented a gentler ambition: Strøget became one of Europe's first pedestrianised streets in 1962, and the harbour is now clean enough to swim in.

Curiosities: Tivoli Gardens (1843) charmed Walt Disney into taking notes; the Little Mermaid has been decapitated twice and survived; Freetown Christiania has run on its own rules since 1971; and 'hygge', the Danish art of cosiness, has no exact translation and needs none by candlelight.
