The story of Dublin
Dublin doubles its own name: the Irish Dubh Linn means "black pool," after the dark tidal pond where Vikings beached their longships in 841, while the official Irish name, Baile Átha Cliath, means "town of the hurdle ford." Both describe the same crossing of the Liffey.
The Georgian 18th century made Dublin the second city of the British Empire, all russet brick and fanlight doors; the 1916 Easter Rising, launched from the General Post Office on O'Connell Street, began the road to independence. The city's greatest export may be sentences: Swift, Wilde, Shaw, Yeats, Joyce, Beckett, and Heaney were all Dubliners by birth or adoption.
Curiosities: Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on his brewery in 1759 at £45 a year; Trinity College's Long Room shelves 200,000 of the oldest books in Ireland beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling; and Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed city parks in Europe, complete with wild fallow deer.
