The story of Lisbon
Lisbon's name reaches back through Roman Olisipo to a Phoenician trading post, legend insists on "Allis Ubbo," the safe harbour, and an even older tale credits Ulysses himself with founding the city on his way home from Troy. Whatever the truth, people have lived on these seven hills for nearly three thousand years, making Lisbon one of the oldest capitals in Western Europe, older than Rome.
Moorish al-Ušbūna fell to crusaders in 1147, and four centuries later the city struck gold: Vasco da Gama sailed from Belém to India in 1497, and Lisbon became the counting-house of a spice empire spanning half the globe. The catastrophic earthquake, tsunami, and fires of All Saints' Day 1755 levelled it, and the rebuilt downtown, the Baixa Pombalina, became one of Europe's first examples of earthquake-resistant planning.
Curiosities: the Livraria Bertrand (1732) is the world's oldest bookshop still trading; the mournful fado sung in Alfama's taverns is UNESCO-listed; and the custard tarts of Belém still follow a secret monastery recipe from before 1837.
