The story of Porto
Porto is the city that named a country. The Roman twin settlement of Portus and Cale, straddling the Douro's mouth, became "Portucale", and when a county of that name grew into a kingdom, Portugal was born. Locals answer to a saltier name: tripeiros, "tripe-eaters," from the legend that the city gave its meat to Henry the Navigator's fleet in 1415 and kept only the offal.
The city's fortune arrived in barrels. When 17th-century England fell out with France over wine, English merchants turned to the Douro's dark, fortified reds; the 1703 Methuen Treaty sealed the deal, and the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia still line the river bank opposite the medieval Ribeira, now a UNESCO site.
Curiosities: the azulejo-tiled São Bento station holds some twenty thousand hand-painted tiles; the Livraria Lello's crimson staircase helped inspire a certain wizarding aesthetic; and the francesinha, a sandwich drowned in beer sauce, is the city's proudest cardiological dare.
