The story of Nice
Nice is named for victory itself: Greek settlers from Marseille founded Nikaia around 350 BC, honouring Nike after a battle won. For most of its history the city belonged not to France but to Savoy and the Kingdom of Sardinia, it only voted to join France in 1860, and the old town's ochre facades and gnocchi still feel half-Italian.
In the 18th and 19th centuries the English aristocracy adopted Nice as a winter cure, funding the seafront walk that is still called the Promenade des Anglais. The Belle Époque left wedding-cake hotels; the 20th century left Matisse and Chagall, both with museums in the hills.
Curiosities: Nice's Carnival is one of the world's oldest, with flower battles along the seafront; socca, chickpea pancake seared in wood ovens, is the market-stall staple; and the pebbled beach's stones are hauled down by the Var river, not imported.
