The story of Vicenza
Vicenza was Roman Vicetia, a quiet Veneto town whose name may stem from a word for 'victorious', but its real founder, locals will tell you, arrived in the 16th century: Andrea Palladio. The stonemason-turned-architect rebuilt the city in cool classical harmony, and 'Palladian' became the adjective for half the parliaments, plantations, and country houses of the Western world.
Under Venetian rule Vicenza grew rich on silk and building: Palladio filled it with palaces and finished his career with the Teatro Olimpico, the world's oldest surviving indoor theatre, whose trompe-l'oeil wooden streets, built for a single 1585 performance of Oedipus Rex, were never struck and still stand.
Curiosities: the city and Palladio's villas form a UNESCO site; Monticello and the White House both speak Vicenza's architectural dialect; the town is Italy's goldsmithing capital, trading gold for centuries; and baccalà alla vicentina, creamed stockfish, is defended by its own solemn confraternity.
