The story of Venice
Venice is named for the Veneti, the pre-Roman people of the region, but the city itself was born of catastrophe: mainlanders fleeing Attila and later invaders hid among the lagoon's mudflats, driving oak and alder piles into the silt. Deprived of land, they farmed the sea, and built a republic that lasted eleven hundred years.
La Serenissima's merchant empire ran on salt, silk, spices, and shipbuilding: the Arsenale could assemble a galley in a day, an assembly line four centuries before Ford. Marco Polo sailed from here; the world's first public casino (1638) and first ghetto (1516, the word comes from a Venetian foundry, 'geto') both appeared here.
Curiosities: the city stands on millions of timber piles, hardened like stone in the oxygen-poor mud; gondolas have been black by sumptuary law since 1562 and are built asymmetric to row one-sided; and the MOSE flood barriers now rise against the acqua alta that ever more often laps into St Mark's.
