The story of Milan
Milan descends from Mediolanum, Celtic-Latin for "in the middle of the plain", founded around 590 BC and important enough that Constantine legalised Christianity from here with the Edict of Milan in 313 AD. For a stretch of the late empire, it, not Rome, was the capital.
Viscontis and Sforzas made it a Renaissance power (Leonardo spent nearly twenty years here, leaving the Last Supper on a refectory wall); Austria groomed it; industry crowned it. Modern Milan runs Italy's money, media, design, and fashion from behind unshowy facades.
Curiosities: the Duomo took nearly six centuries to finish, Milanese still say 'lungo come la fabbrica del Duomo' for anything endless, and its rooftop forest of spires can be walked; the Last Supper survived a 1943 bomb that demolished the room around its sandbagged wall; and the Galleria's mosaic bull invites a heel-spin for luck, wearing a hole in the floor.
