The story of Ljubljana

Ljubljana
Ljubljana in Slovenia · 46.05°N, 14.51°E · stylised map

Ljubljana's name is happily entangled with ljubljena, "beloved" in Slovene, though scholars trace it to the river Ljubljanica. The city's founding myth goes older still: Jason and the Argonauts, fleeing with the Golden Fleece, allegedly slew a swamp dragon here; that dragon now guards the city from bridge pedestals and the coat of arms.

Roman Emona's walls still edge the centre, but today's city is largely the vision of two events: the 1895 earthquake, which cleared the way for Vienna-style Art Nouveau, and the architect Jože Plečnik, who between the wars single-handedly composed the riverbanks, bridges, market, and library into one of Europe's most coherent small capitals.

Curiosities: the central Triple Bridge is exactly that, three bridges fanned side by side; the car-free core hums with café life; Metelkova, a squatted army barracks, is now a graffiti-bright autonomous culture zone; and Ljubljana was European Green Capital 2016.
