The story of Zagreb
Zagreb's name may come from zagrabiti, "to scoop", legend has a thirsty commander ordering a girl named Manda to scoop water from a spring, hence the Manduševac fountain. The city itself was born twins: clerical Kaptol and secular Gradec glared at each other across a stream called Bloody Bridge until merging in 1850.
An Austro-Hungarian provincial capital of yellow facades and coffeehouse ritual, Zagreb became the capital of independent Croatia in 1991. Its upper town keeps gaslit lanes; its lower town, Habsburg squares and a horseshoe of parks.
Curiosities: the Grič cannon has fired from the Lotrščak Tower at noon every day since 1877, and locals still check their watches by it; the funicular connecting the towns is one of the world's shortest at 66 metres; the Museum of Broken Relationships began here as a breakup joke and went global; and the necktie descends from scarves worn by 17th-century Croatian cavalry, 'cravate' from 'Croat.'
