The story of Rome
Rome's founding legend needs no introduction, Romulus, Remus, the she-wolf, and a fratricidal property dispute in 753 BC, though the name may reach back further, perhaps to an Etruscan family or the old name of the Tiber. Romans simply call it l'Urbe: The City.
No city has run a longer show: kingdom, republic, empire of a million people, papal capital, baroque theatre, and modern capital stacked in layers you can read in any excavation. The Pantheon's dome, poured in concrete nineteen centuries ago, is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome on earth.
Curiosities: coins tossed in the Trevi Fountain, about €1.5 million a year, go to charity; the city hosts a sovereign state (the Vatican) and a knightly order with sovereignty but no territory (the Order of Malta); SPQR still brands the manhole covers; and the cats lounging in Torre Argentina's ruins, where Caesar was stabbed, are protected as part of the city's 'biocultural heritage.'
