The story of Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik takes its name from dubrava, an oak grove, though for most of its life the world knew it as Ragusa, a merchant republic that rivalled Venice with fleets, consulates, and exquisite diplomacy instead of armies. Its motto: liberty is not sold for all the gold in the world.
The republic was startlingly ahead of its time: it opened one of Europe's first pharmacies (1317, still operating), banned the slave trade in 1416, and invented quarantine, arriving ships waited forty days, quaranta giorni, on nearby islands. The great earthquake of 1667 and Napoleon ended the republic; the 1991–92 siege scarred but never broke the walls.
Curiosities: those walls, up to six metres thick, have never been breached by force; the Stradun's limestone is polished to glass by centuries of feet; and as King's Landing, the city now repels a different kind of siege, armed with selfie sticks.
