The story of Sofia
Sofia has worn many names: Thracian Serdica, after the Celtic Serdi tribe, was so beloved by Constantine the Great that he reportedly said "Serdica is my Rome." The city took its current name in the 14th century from the ancient basilica of St Sofia, which still stands; its motto is "Grows, but does not age."
Sat on the crossroads between Europe and Asia, the city passed through Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and five centuries of Ottoman hands before becoming the capital of liberated Bulgaria in 1879, a compact town that European architects rebuilt with Viennese flair. In January 2026 Bulgaria adopted the euro, closing a 147-year run for the lev.
Curiosities: metro construction kept unearthing ancient Serdica, so the ruins were simply built into the stations, you can change trains inside a Roman street; the yellow cobblestones of the centre were a wedding gift from Austria-Hungary; and free hot mineral water still flows from public taps by the old baths, where locals queue with bottles.
What it does best
The National Gallery's icon collection and the unabashedly retro Museum of Socialist Art.
Shopska salad, warm banitsa, and Bulgarian mavrud in the Vitosha Boulevard bistros.
The gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Roman Serdica excavated beneath the streets.
Vitosha mountain's trails and ski lifts, rising straight from the city's edge.
