The story of Athens
Athens is the city the gods fought over: Athena beat Poseidon by offering the olive tree against his salt spring, and the city took her name, or, as linguists note, perhaps the goddess took the city's, since 'Athenai' predates the myths. Either way, it has been continuously inhabited for over three millennia.
Its 5th-century BC golden age, democracy, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, the Parthenon, lasted barely two generations yet furnished half of Western civilisation's vocabulary. The Parthenon's later career as church, mosque, and gunpowder store (catastrophically shelled in 1687) explains its ruins better than age does. When Athens became the capital of newly independent Greece in 1834 it was a town of a few thousand souls beneath the rock.
Curiosities: the first modern Olympics ran here in 1896 in a rebuilt ancient stadium of white marble; the Tower of the Winds is arguably the world's first weather station; and the evening volta up to the Acropolis's flanks still ends, as it should, with the Parthenon glowing honey-coloured at sunset.
