The story of Santorini
Santorini is a Venetian name, Santa Irini, for a chapel of Saint Irene, pinned on the Greek island of Thera. Around 1600 BC the island exploded in one of history's largest volcanic eruptions, burying the Minoan town of Akrotiri in ash (its frescoed houses, preserved Pompeii-style, fuel the Atlantis theories) and collapsing the centre of the island into the sea.
What remains is the caldera: a ring of cliffs three hundred metres high, striped in lava reds and blacks, with whitewashed villages balanced on the rim like snow. The island's vines grow coiled into ground-hugging baskets, koulara, against the wind, producing Assyrtiko wines from some of Europe's oldest ungrafted rootstock.
Curiosities: the caldera is one of the few on earth you can sail into, with the volcano's active islets still steaming mid-bay; the white-and-blue colour scheme owes as much to lime disinfectant laws and the flag as to aesthetics; and Oia's sunset draws applause nightly, as if the sun had rehearsed.
