The story of Valletta

Valletta
Valletta in Malta · 35.90°N, 14.51°E · stylised map

Valletta is named for a soldier-monk: Grand Master Jean de Valette, who led the Knights of St John through the Great Siege of 1565, when nine thousand defenders held off an Ottoman armada. The victorious knights immediately built a new fortress-capital on the peninsula, Europe's first fully planned grid city, 'built by gentlemen for gentlemen.'

Behind bastions up to twenty metres thick, the knights filled their small capital with auberges and one astonishing church: St John's Co-Cathedral, plain as a barracks outside, gold to the rafters inside, floored with 400 marble knightly tombs and hung with Caravaggio's largest painting, the only one he ever signed, made while hiding here from a murder charge.

Curiosities: the entire city is a UNESCO site, one of the densest concentrations of historic buildings anywhere; Malta earned the George Cross for surviving relentless WWII bombing, and it flies on the flag; and Valletta is the EU's smallest capital, walkable end to end in twenty minutes.
